Where we can, we will always share information with you; the good, the bad and the ugly. Hence why we shared the recent board update with you. Ahead of their imminent announcement, we want to let you know that the Club has agreed to sell Brodie Croft and Andy Ackers to Leeds Rhinos.

Reds Rise Together: The Owner’s Newsletter - News

Whilst Brodie had a well-documented NRL release clause, we were not planning on seeing him depart this winter. However, the Club will now receive a club-record fee for Brodie, easing some of the financial pressures we have previously communicated. Andy was asked to stay; however, he has expressed his desire to make the move to Leeds. We thank them for their efforts and sincerely wish them both the very best of luck in the future.

Whilst the Club and a band of volunteers in the CBS are working hard to bridge the funding gaps to make the Club self-sufficient, in the absence of a benefactor, the Club must be wily with its squad management.

In most other sports, player trades are part and parcel of the game and keep the vast majority of clubs afloat. It is perhaps a sad state of affairs that in Rugby League, transfers are seen as a side of imminent failure rather than key business decisions.

None of us ‘want’ to be a selling club and that is our aim and belief, and we are confident we will get there. The stark facts are that with only a modest downturn in financial performance and outlook coupled with settling legacy covid debts, the Club must make some tough decisions.

However, the Clubs’ coaching team are still confident of building a competitive squad for season 2024, which in a number of areas will see an improvement.

Looking ahead, the Club is still scoring strong in the IMG criteria and funding pots next season should open up especially once the stadium deal is approved. We will also see the results of the new commercial team and the benefits of the additional resource, ideas and experiences of both the new Board members and from the sub-committees, all of whom are aligned to the IMG framework.

Via the CBS, we are reinventing the Clubs place in the community including for the first time a city-wide Rugby Strategy. This will open up commercial partnerships and revenue streams not available to the Club before.

However, it is incumbent on the CBS Board and a fundamental pillar of the IMG criteria that the Club runs in a sustainable manner. For the long term and not just one season.
